How to Become a Texas School Bus Driver This is a summarized guide. Contact your Transportation Manager for details.
NOTE: You can obtain your 20 hour School Bus Driver Safety Training certificate at any time, prior to transporting students and licensing.

1. Obtain a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), and a DOT physical.

You will need to pass a DPS issued "written" exam to receive your Class B CDL PERMIT with Passenger and Schoolbus endorsement. Study the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Handbook.

2. Complete an approved Entry Level Driver Training Program (ELDT).

The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Program is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Learn more about the Entry-Level Driver Training.

3. Schedule and pass a road/skills test from an approved TX DPS CDL Examiner.

4. Enroll in the first-available 20-hour school bus driver safety training class.

Apply for an Enrollment Certificate (temporary card), if you are needed to transport students before the 20 hours of training is complete.
